Experience Big Bend in style - comfortably and sustainably...
We fell in love with the Big Bend area in the mid 90’s and we are passionate about outdoor activities and environmentally conscious living. We designed Javelina Hideout as our retirement home, and our dream became a reality in 2017 when construction was complete. JH is a multi-dwelling retreat located on 10 breathtaking acres that we enjoy sharing with like-minded people.
Javelina Hideout is an eco-friendly, off-grid desert home that blends in beautifully with the stunning desert scenery. It is the perfect place to enjoy a post hike cocktail at the sunset bar, roast marshmallows, dine under the 480 square foot covered porch of the main house, swing under the private porch of the bunk house, or kick back in your hammock and watch the stars come out to play with the milky way.
The property consists of a main house (768 sq ft), a bunkhouse (140 sq ft), and a large shaded porch (480 sq ft). With ample indoor space, we've put a lot of attention into our outdoor space as well.
Enjoy swimming in the hot months at the pool located at the Terlingua Ranch Lodge, about a 15 minute drive from JH. Cost is $5 per person. Adjacent to the free showers and the Bad Rabbit Cafe.

The Space at JH:
The main house features a full kitchen and open concept dining and living area. The kitchen is equipped with an oven, gas range, and a full sized refrigerator, but there is no dishwasher. Pots, pans and dishware are provided for your convenience. There is also no coffeemaker due to the limitations of our solar electric, but the stove will boil a pot of water very quickly and we provide a french press for your morning coffee.
The master bedroom has a large east facing window for morning sunshine, and a high south facing window for views. The room is extremely comfortable with high end bedding and gorgeous views.
We do have an air conditioner in the bedroom of the main home. Due to the constraints of our solar array, the AC can only be run while the sun is up. It will cool the house off sufficiently in the summer, and night time temps drop enough that it usually isn't needed overnight.
When the weather is too nice to be indoors, you can also cook outside on the charcoal park grill or the propane grill. We also offer a large outdoor cooking station with a recycling center, and a wonderful sunset bar.
The separate bunkhouse is ideal for guests wanting a little extra quiet and solitude away from the main house. It has 2 TwinXL bunks with screened, sliding windows at the head and foot of each bunk for a nice crossbreeze and views of the stars. It is not air conditioned, but does have a heater and is passively designed for comfortable sleeping most of the year with an oscillating fan and crossbreeze. There is an outdoor sink and 2 burner camp stove under the large private shaded porch, so guests can prepare coffee and small meals at the bunkhouse as well.
Enjoy an evening campfire around the firepit out front (please bring your own firewood), or during a burn ban use the gas firepit located in the seating area out back.
Special Request of our guests:
We do ask that our guests not use more than 10 gallons of rainwater per day / per person, and that we conserve our most valuable and precious resource in the desert - our water!
Please do not bring or use any electrical appliances that heat up - such as a blow dryer, curling iron, coffee maker, etc... These appliances will drain the solar battery bank and can possibly damage the system. Please conserve energy the same way you conserve water.

We ask that you please respect the environment, conserve, and practice sustainable living while you explore Big Bend with us.
